The older my little ones are becoming, the more we are thinking about traveling as a family. We want to explore places that are more than just a few hours away on a plane and see parts of the world that are completely different to our little home in Belfast. Here are some of The Best Cities To Discover With The Family.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
There is so much more to this laid-back city than coffee shops and the you-know-what bits – it is actually a fantastic place to visit with children. Enjoy both boat and bike rides around the city and the beautiful parks, and check out the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House, depending on the age of your littles. Typical food in Amsterdam is chips and pancakes so you don’t have to worry about fussy eaters.
Sweden is known for being very family-friendly and there is so much for families to enjoy in Gothenburg that it is definitely worth a visit. Liseberg is Scandinavia’s largest theme park for any daredevils in your family, or if you are after a more relaxed vibe, there are plenty of parks, including Slottsskogen which is the largest and also has a small scale zoo inside.
New York, USA
We love the idea of travelling around the United States on a road trip, and New York would be right at the top of our list. There is just so much to see or do, so we would love to check out a Broadway show, enjoy walking around Central Park, visiting the Statue of Liberty and of course checking out the famous Times Square. You could stay in New York for a month and still not manage to see or do everything you want to!
Most children love snow! Although Reykjavik is mainly known as a cultural city full of music, art, history, and shopping, it is also very family friendly too. Children are welcome everywhere and in
most cases, under 12s get in for free – this even includes transport. Enjoy whale watching, see geysers explode and experience the incredible Northern Lights if you go at the right time.
The Danes are all about their children and this city shows that – full of creative playgrounds, events for children and museums and galleries where children are encouraged to interact with the exhibits. The streets are full of bright colours, and Rosenborg Castle is worth a visit as it seems straight out of a fairytale book. It’s easy to get around thanks to being pretty compact and having a good public transport system.
A beautiful city that will delight parents and children alike, Rome is full of history, culture, and incredible food. Your kids are unlikely to get fed up of pizza and gelato between wandering around the Vatican and the Colosseum, not to mention the fact that, it has some of the best coffee in the world, according to 1Cover, which is perfect for parents to enjoy between all of the explorations!
The world is such a big place and there is so much to see or do that if you don’t start your family young, they will never have seen enough of it! It can be a challenge traveling with children, of course, but it is also incredibly rewarding, for them and you. Let me know in the comments what you think are the best cities in the world to explore as a family.
