Pilates The Benefits

Pilates The Benefits

There are so many forms of exercise that we can do from the comfort of our own homes these days. We are no longer tied to just going our local gym to keep fit. Pilates can be a lovely gentle exercise that is perfect at home If you reluctant to join group classes, plus it has lots of added benefits as well. What I really like about Pilates is its suitable for all ages as well. My mum even goes to classes which I find incredibly inspiring.

Pilates My Experience

I was referred to Pilates as a form of strengthing my back after a few back injuries. Having been 5ft 10 from the age of 13 I have tried for many years to disguise my height. This has included not standing straight and not sitting correctly. I really wish I had embraced my height from a young age like I do now. Pilates for me was about re-engaging muscles that I didn’t use correctly. Which in turn helped strengthen the muscles in my affected areas. With the added benefit of also teaching me to align and reposition myself. When I learnt these valuable skills I began to notice a great improvement in all areas of my back. I will always have to be cautious about lifting heavy items etc as we all should My range of motion has improved considerably and I rarely get many symptoms associated with back problems.

In my, location, Pilates can be recommended by Physios as a reconditioning treatment. (person dependent) It’s also a great tool for ladies after birth who may have Pelvic Floor issues, to help tone the muscles again. (Please get Doctors approval before starting any form of exercise post birth.

Some of the Benefits Include

  • Improving posture
  • Boosting Stamina
  • Muscle Power
  • Improving Flexibility
  • Stress Reduction

What You Need

You can pick up Yoga mats pretty cheaply from Sports stores, my local Tesco even sells them in the Fitness aisle. Mine cost around the £7 mark. They aren’t particularly necessary but its an added bonus to have one. I would recommend wearing something loose and comfortable.

If you want to follow an instructor you can pick up Yoga DVDS up online or again from your local supermarket. There are also a variety of Apps for iPhone and Android that allow you to follow a Pilates movements.

***As with any form of exercise seek Medical Advice before starting
